ABOUT OUR POSITIONS

PRESIDENT

The SMU President is elected during the Spring semester for the following academic year. The president oversees the functioning of the organization. Responsibilities include regular meetings with Biola leadership and SMU advisors, planning and facilitating meetings with the Board of Directors as well as SMU All Staff meetings and executing a vision for the year.

VICE PRESIDENT /

FINANCIAL CONTROLLER

The Vice President and Financial Controller are the only positions within SMU which are a two year commitment. When someone is hired as Financial Controller, they become Vice President the following year. The Financial Controller spends a year working under leadership of the Vice President to learn the ins and outs of the financial responsibilities within SMU. The Financial Controller learns protocol for reimbursements and time cards for SMU employees, while the Vice President is responsible for external procedures and communication with Biola’s Finance Department.

"THE FINANCIAL CONTROLLER WORKS TO ASSIST THE VICE PRESIDENT IN MANAGING THE BUDGET, TIME CARDS, AND OTEHR PROJECTS DESIGNATED BY THE VICE PRESIDENT. ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT BEING IN THIS POSITION IS THE OPPERTUNITY TO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES WITH EVERY DEPARTMENT OF BEING ABLE TO REBUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM!"

FINANCIAL CONTROLLER 2019-2020

LOCAL MISSIONS

Local Missions is made up of the Director, a Logistics Coordinator, and 3 Team Developers. The Director oversees this team as well as communicates with external missions organizations and other departments within SMU. The Logistics Coordinator handles things like trip proposals and other technical aspects that are required to send out teams. Team Developers get to be a resource for trip team leaders through building relationships, providing encouragement and prayer. They also get to lead the Missions class that preps leaders for their trips. NEW: Within The missions department there is now a position called Marketing and Events Coordinator that will work with both Local & Global Missions departments to assist with planning events and fundraising for teams.

LM DIRECTOR 2019-2020

Global Missions function similar to the Local Missions department in that there are 3 Team Developers and a Logistics Coordinator under Leadership of the Global Missions Director. The main difference is of course that this department focuses on international mission. The director communicates with organizations around the world and guides the team to plan overseas trips. Team Developers work alongside trip team leaders to provide prayer, leadership, and guidance through weekly meetings. The Logistics Coordinator handles the practical steps that it takes to get teams approved and sent out. NEW: Within The missions department there is now a position called Marketing and Events Coordinator that will work with both Local & Global Missions departments to assist with planning events and fundraising for teams.

GLOBAL MISSIONS

GM LOGISTICS COORD 2019-2020

MARCOM

The Marketing & Communications department creates and executes all the visual media for the entire organization. Everything from poster design to social media to the Missions Conference identity comes from MarCom. The Director acts as a creative director, building and maintaining a cohesive visual identity for SMU as well as communicating with other SMU departments to determine projects. 2 Graphic Designers are responsible for designing things like posters, mission trip shirts, and Missions Conference identity. Additionally there are 2 Media Coordinators who are in charge of all video content for SMU and Missions Conference. And finally the Communications Coordinator position runs all external communication for SMU such as social media, blog, and newsletters.

"WORKING FOR MARCOM HAS BEEN ON OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD AT BIOLA. GETTING TO WORK ALONGSIDE A TEAM OF ARTISTS TO CREATE FOR THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE FURTHERING OF HIS KINGDOM IS A PRIVILEGE. THE MARCOM STAFF QUICKLY TURNED INTO SOME OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE TO BE AROUND."

MISSIONS CONFERENCE

The two Missions Conference Co-Directors have the privilege of planning the entirety of our student-run conference that is held every Spring. The Co-Directors develop a theme, hire a staff, and oversee the planning of the conference. Under the Directors, there are six departments, led by twelve coordinators. "MC DIRECTORS PLAN AND EXECUTE THE THEME AND VISION FOR MISSIONS CONFERENCE BY LEADING A STAFF OF 100 STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ORGANIZED INTO 6 DEPARTMENTS. WE ALSO WORK TO INVOLVE/INCLUDE DIFFERENT CLUBS AND DEPARTMENTS ON CAMPUS TO REPRESENT THE STUDENT BODY WELL AND TO HELP RELAY THE IMPORTANCE AND RELEVANCE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION TO ALL STUDENTS."

ADMINISTRATION

A team of four Office Assistants is led by the Director of Administration. This department is a bit different in that they work for both SMU and SGA (double the fun!). They are tasked with things like putting together our staff retreats, serving the various needs of both staffs, and being the friendly faces that greet you upon entering our office.

SMU's HR department consists of two positions: HR Director and Diversity Coordinator. The Director handles things such as hiring and applications. The Diversity Coordinator works with the SMU Board of Directors as well as other campus organizations to develop relationships and explore opportunities that would increase inclusivity and diversity within SMU. These two roles work together to make sure that things within SMU are organized and working smoothly. They do a lot of behind the scenes work to make our organization thrive.
